Our Inspiration

The Legacy of Tony Gwynn

Tony Gwynn was one of the most iconic and respected players in Major League Baseball history. Spending his entire 20-year career with the San Diego Padres, he was a 15-time All-Star, 8-time National League batting champion, and a 5-time Gold Glove Award winner. With a career batting average of .338, Gwynn was known for his precision at the plate and his leadership both on and off the field.

But what truly set Gwynn apart was his unwavering commitment to education and mentorship. After retiring, he became the head coach at San Diego State University, mentoring hundreds of young athletes and instilling in them the values of hard work, respect, and perseverance.

“The minute you start thinking the past is more important than the present, you’ve already started to fade.”
Meet the founders

Powered by Women

Anisha Gwynn Jones and Mekaela Berry co-founded TGLE with a shared vision: to use baseball as a vehicle for opportunity, community, and growth. As passionate advocates for youth development, both founders bring a mix of grassroots organizing, program management, and deep love for the game.

Together, Anisha and Mekaela launched TGLE in honor of Tony Gwynn’s enduring legacy—aiming to close the equity gap in youth baseball by offering scholarships, mentorship, and experiences that shape both the athlete and the person.
