Ball to Business: Guiding the Next Generation of Athletes at Under Armour

What happens when the game ends? That’s the question we explored with 60 young Black athletes at Under Armour’s new Baltimore facility. I had the privilege of speaking on a panel alongside industry leaders, sharing our journeys from the field to fulfilling careers beyond the game. Here’s what I learned from this inspiring experience.

A Panel of Game-Changers

The panel was composed of three individuals who have successfully transitioned into professionals in the sports industry. Each of us brought a unique perspective, sharing our personal stories of how our journeys from college led us to fulfilling careers in the world of sports. Kameron Wells, Data Analyst for the Boston Red Sox, Ennis Coble, General Counsel with the NY Mets and moderated by Dondre Yon, Project Manager for Under Armour. My fellow panelists and I were united in our passion for sports and our commitment to education.

The Power of Education in Sports Careers

One of the key topics we discussed was the importance of education and its role in opening doors to opportunities beyond playing sports. We emphasized that while baseball might be the primary focus for these young athletes, it is essential to have a solid educational foundation to fall back on. Education equips them with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in various fields, whether within sports or in entirely different industries.

Lessons from My Journey

Sharing my personal journey was a highlight for me. I recounted my days as a college student, the challenges I faced in finding my path to my dream of working in sports, and how my dedication to both helped me forge a successful career in professional sports. I spoke about the pivotal moments that shaped me, the mentors who guided me, and the lessons I learned along the way.

Engaging with the Next Generation

I truly enjoyed seeing the passion and interest from these young athletes. They asked insightful questions about our career paths, sought advice on managing time and stress, and wanted to know how to leverage their athletic skills in the job market. It was rewarding to see their eyes light up with new possibilities and to play a part in broadening their horizons.

Final Reflections: Paying It Forward

Speaking at the Ball to Business Career Series was more than just an event; it was a chance to give back and inspire the next generation of athletes. It reminded me of the power of storytelling and the impact we can have by sharing our experiences. I am grateful for the opportunity and look forward to seeing these young athletes succeed both on and off the field.
